Kiwis living in Australia could have an easier path to citizenship and enjoy more benefits in their adopted country after Labor ousted Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the Australian election.

New Zealanders living in Australia have long called for greater rights, with most unable to vote, easily gain citizenship or access welfare support and student loans.

In 2019, Labor said it would consider changes to Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangements (TTTA) for New Zealanders living in Australia.

“Labor will consider the permanent residency status and potential citizenship arrangements for New Zealand citizens living in Australia under the terms of the TTTA,” Labor said in a national policy document at the time.
